Factors of Acceptance for Mobile Learning in Corporate Settings: An Empirical Investigation in Banking Industry  [PDF]
Ayse Kok
Intelligent Information Management (IIM) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/iim.2013.55015
Abstract: Due to the proliferation of mobile technology and devices like smartphones and tablet PCs into our daily lives, m-learning attracts also more attention in professional training in enterprises. Derived from these statements, this research paper is focused on the following question: what are acceptance factors for m-learning (mobile learning) in the organizational setting? The paper analyzes a real experience in m-learning for training the banking personnel in an international banking institution in Turkey. For this purpose, a mobile virtual learning environment called as mFOR@ was developed and implemented, which was designed to support the training and development process for employees using Pocket PCs. The participants of the training activity (13 professionals) evaluated the m-learning experience via a semi-structured interview; all the content and interactions within mFOR@ were analyzed via content analysis. As a basis for a successful implementation in professional training in enterprises, the acceptance by decision makers and the learners is critical. That is the reason why I present a qualitative analysis of acceptance and the perceived value of m-learning in a corporate setting.
Behind the Scenes with a Video Training Platform: The Challenges of Researching the Provision of Open Educational Resources  [PDF]
Ayse Kok
Advances in Internet of Things (AIT) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ait.2013.34009
Abstract:

Video training platforms are now being implemented on a large scale in organizations. In this paper, I look at a video training platform including open educational resources available for many employees with varying patterns and motivations for use. This has provided me with a research challenge to find methods that help other practitioners in the field understand and explain such initiatives. I describe ways to model the research and identify where pressures and contradictions can be found, drawing on a reflective view of my own practice in performing the research. Open educational resources are defined as technology-enabled educational resources that are openly available for consultation, use and adaptation by users for non-commercial purposes [1]. The bank subject to this case study has been the first organisation in Turkey that provided open educational resources for all its employees. The video platform (called “For @ Tube”) provides users with over 100 video lectures drawn from reputable universities around the world including Yale and Harvard. Other learning tools such as discussion forums, blogs and traditional e-learning courses have been made available to the users on the e-learning platform called “For @” since 2006. In this paper, I aim to introduce the new video training platform (“For @ Tube”) and outline some of the main research issues surrounding such an

AN ONLINE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIVIST TOOL: A Secondary School Experience In The Developing World
Ayse KOK
The Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education , 2008,
Abstract: ABSTRACT With the rapid advances in technology, several online learning tools come onto the stage. Being an online learning delivery tool to support a full range of teaching and learning activities conducted by educational institutions Moodle facilitates online content creation and collaboration by entailing various social and communication tools that support teacher-student, student-student, and teacher-teacher interactions. This paper presents the "Moodling"(Moodle, 2005) experience within a secondary school in a developing country, namely Turkey. Based on a focus discussion group with the foreign language teachers, the author depicts the critical points that need to be taken into consideration so that an effective collaborative online platform for both teachers and students to learn together can exist.
RETHINKING THE COMPETENCIES OF INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNERS AS INFORMATION ARCHITECTS
Ayse KOK
The Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education , 2009,
Abstract: In this paper, the author depicts how the work of the instructional designers can be re-thought within the framework of information architecture. The paper briefly provides an overview of the main definitions of the information architect along with the major information architecture designs by describing the changing landscape in more detail from the perspective of the Articulation theory. It then moves into a discussion of the similarities between an information architect and an instructional designer. The paper concludes that the instructional designers should adopt a multidisciplinary perspective in order to design effective learning spaces and that there must be a link between the information architecture and the previously un-articulated disciplines in order to develop a disciplinary identity of instructional designers.
DEMYSTIFYING VIRTUAL COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE: A Case Study of IBM
Ayse KOK
The Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education , 2010,
Abstract: The purpose of this proposed research study is to empirically explore the nature of virtual communities of practice (CoP) in a global organisation within the context of its International Corporate Volunteer (ICV) Program. This study investigates whether and how the use of virtual CoP evolves and becomes embedded within this organization.Following the logic of inductive research, a qualitative case study will be proposed here, to gain insight on the extent to which virtual CoPs can be utilized. For this purpose, a global business organisation that established a partnership with a Canadian non-profit organisation and implements a corporate volunteer program is proposed.Although previous studies confirmed the important role that the quality of dialogue plays in the cultivation of effective communities of practice this study shows that despite the quality of exchanges, virtual CoP are not necessarily utilized due to some alternative channels of communication.
Understanding the Technology Enhanced Learning Environments from A Cognitive Perspective
Ayse KOK
International Education Studies , 2009, DOI: 10.5539/ies.v2n4p3
Abstract: This conceptual paper discusses some principles for powerful learning environments based on a cognitive perspective. Throughout the paper, it is argued that the accommodation of different individual cognitive preferences is crucial for its alignment with the human cognitive architecture. The paper concludes that in order to be aligned with the human cognitive architecture, TEL (technology enhanced learning) environments should provide supportive visual and interactive multimedia, self-assessment tools, instructional guidance about the purpose of the learning environment and how to operate it. Based on the prior research undertaken in this area, the paper concludes that a more evidence-based model for deriving the positioning would allow the learning professionals to move from a framework to a genuine taxonomy.
How to Manage the Inclusion of E-Learning in Learning Strategy: Insights from a Turkish Banking Institution
Ayse Kok
International Journal of Advanced Corporate Learning (iJAC) , 2013, DOI: 10.3991/ijac.v6i1.2341
Abstract: The purpose of this research paper is to demonstrate how a banking institution in Turkey is managing the inclusion of e-learning in its learning strategy. The case study demonstrates that the adoption of e-learning is actually influencing bank’s learning strategy, and that the simple delivery through technology cannot be sustained as a separate form of training, an appendix to traditional instructor-led activities. To be successful, it has to be seen as a part of a complete learning architecture that includes a variety of tools, approaches, and a coherent learning culture. The analysis shows two emerging phenomena: A different degree of success of the e-learning initiative depending upon its coherence with the organizational culture, and the bank’s strategy A changing balance of classroom training and e-learning in relationship to the adoption of the LMS adoption in each department

A GRID-DEVELOPMENT FOR THE LEARNING AND TEACHING PRACTICE IN SECOND LIFE
Ayse KOK,Zuhal TANRIKULU
The Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education , 2011,
Abstract: This paper examines the emerging ideas to implement the usage of Second Life as an educational tool in a wide range of subject areas. The majority of the information used to create these 10 pedagogical approaches was derived from a series of participative inquiries, personal observations, formal and informal interviews, and documenting the perceptions of teachers and students using (and trying to use) Second Life as an educational tool. Ten pedagogical approaches have emerged thus far. Each section briefing explains the concept, illustrates the idea with examples, and provides implementation suggestions.
